Step by Step instructions on how to add a DMCA Protection Badge to your website
Follow these simple steps to ensure your website protection is successful and quick.
- Register first - Website Badge registration it's free!
- Pick a Badge you like. Note: if you do not pick the badge code when you are logged into the Protection Portal none of the pages your badge choice is placed on will be indexed to your DMCA.com Protection account.
- Copy the embed code.
- Paste it either in the footer of your website (to protect all pages with that footer), or on certain pages you want protected.
- Badge code embed best practices:
- Make certain the DMCA.com code is "view-able" within the source code of your webpage.
- Do not remove the GUID or Unique alphanumeric tracking and status page code.
- Do not remove the status page link, it's better for users to see your protection status than the DMCA.com home page.
- Make certain the webpage(s) you are placing the badge on is free of validation errors. Check your webpages through a markup validation service.
- Get Verified Status by far the best option for your website is to have a fully verified website certificate and status page. The website certificate and status page is connected to your Protection Badge.
- Every page that contains a DMCA Protection Badge will be automatically added to the protected pages list.
- New web pages with the DMCA Protection Badge are detected instantly and generally appear in the secure DMCA Protection Portal Protected Pages list within 24 hours after placing the DMCA Protection Badge on your webpage.
- Placing the DMCA.com Protection Badge on your webpage triggers the DMCA.com crawling/indexing systems to come check your page as it is requested.
Notes regarding DMCA.com Protection Page indexing:
- However, most new web browsers cache the badge and so it may not be actually requesting the badge from each page that you visit as your browser is likely caching our protection badge, therefore not queuing the page for crawling/indexing.
- With DMCA.com's Free Protection Badge service indexing is also page traffic dependent. Some pages may index slower if they do not have user traffic. To test simply refresh a low/no traffic page and check the index.
DMCA.com Fast Tip
Should the Protection Badge be used for alternate purposes and not link to a protection status page OR be located on websites using stolen content, it must be reported.
Confirm it works!
Once the protection badge code has been placed on your website / web pages, click on the badge to confirm the link to your DMCA.com Website Certificate works. It is quite likely the first time you click on the badge the Website Certificate will return with an error message and status "Unavailable". However simply refresh (or hit f5) on your webpage and click the protection badge again.
Your DMCA.com Website Certificate will remain "Unavailable" if the DMCA.com Protection Badge Security crawler is unable to do the following:
- Access the page.
- Parse the source code of that page.
- Locate a badge on the page.
- Get a HTTP 200 response from your site.
A tool like Fetch as Google for sites can be used to test whether or not the DMCA.com Protection Badge Security crawler is able to locate the badge code placed on your website.
- Place a webpage URL where the badge HTML has been added (or should be added) into the Google crawler utility.
- Click submit, you should see the result of your page and how it would appear to Google's site crawler. This can be used to test whether or not your website server is responding with the right headers and content.

Troubleshooting
How long until my webpages with a Protection Badge are listed under "My Protected Pages"?
- New web pages with the DMCA Protection Badge are detected instantly and generally appear in the secure DMCA Protection Portal Protected Pages list within 24 hours after placing the DMCA Protection Badge on your webpage.
- Placing the DMCA.com Protection Badge on your webpage triggers the DMCA.com crawling/indexing systems to come check your page as it is requested. However, most new web browsers cache the badge and so it may not be actually requesting the badge from each page that you visit as your browser is likely caching our protection badge, therefore not queuing the page for crawling/indexing. Hold ctrl + F5.
- Non-verified page indexing will take longer and is often queued. Indexing of Non-verified or NON-Protection Pro pages generally takes 24 hours. In some cases, non-verified pages may take up to 48 hours.
- Verified page (Protection Pro clients) indexing is not queued and is prioritized over the FREE service. Indexing of Verified Protection Pro pages generally takes less than 2 hours. In some cases, depending on page volumes, it may be longer. If after 24 hours your Verified pages are still not indexed in your protected pages list, please contact DMCA Support through your case system.
What if after the appropriate indexing time I still cannot see any Protected Pages in my list?
- Make certain the protection badge HTML code on your website/webpage is the exact same HTML code on the badge version located on the badges list when you are logged into the DMCA Protection Portal. They must match.
- Only copy the badge version you want for your website when you are logged into the Portal. Once logged in all the badge codes are updated to match your account.
- Make sure your protection badge HTML code is in the source code of your website. If you cannot view the badge code when previewing the source code of your webpage your webpage will not be indexed.
- The badge HTML code must be part of the URL webpage source code for it to be listed on your Protected Pages list.
- If you find a page on your website that isn't listed in your Protection Pages tab - push ctrl+f5 to force a full page reload. This should cause your pages to get queued and processed. Normally this process happens automatically as people visit your pages.
- Make certain the webpage(s) you are placing the badge on is free of validation errors. Check your web pages through a markup validation service.
